Veni Creator Spiritus
Our first prayer to prepare ourselves for our Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is called “Veni Creator Spiritus,” which means “Come, Holy Spirit,” in Latin.
Why do we begin with this prayer? To closely imitate Mary!
When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary asking her to become the mother of Jesus, Mary asked how this would be done.
Gabriel explained, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (Luke 1:35).
Then Mary replied, “Let it be to me according to your word,” agreeing to the Holy Spirit working with her to form Jesus in her womb as a tiny baby (Luke 1:38).
The Holy Spirit is the gift of love which Jesus promised His Apostles He would ask God the Father to send to each of us here on earth—and we first received this gift into our souls at Baptism. As it says in the Bible, “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5).
The “Veni Creator Spiritus” prayer is very old and ancient—we Catholics have been praying these words since 800 A.D.! When we pray or sing this prayer, we imitate Mary by asking the Holy Spirit to come and live in our souls, so that we can be transformed to do great and loving things for God! We also praise the Holy Spirit for how amazing and beautiful He is, pouring love into every moment of our lives.
We’ll pray this prayer to the Holy Spirit slowly, broken into three parts over three days, so we can think carefully about each word.
